    Before running out and getting chickens please rem Before running out and getting chickens please remember these crucial advisories: 1. Have an outdoor coop AND indoor brooder ready to go BEFORE you bring chickens home. Chickens grow really fast and baby chicks are fragile. Your brooder should have a top in place for when they try to fly. 2. It takes chickens 5 months to 1 year before they start laying. 3. They do not have an infinite amount of eggs. Usually they peak in production in their first year. 4. What will you do with them when they stop laying? 5. You don’t need a rooster to get chicken eggs. If you want a rooster you should have a minimum of 10 hens per rooster. 6. Some roosters are aggressive and may come after you. It’s not their fault, they’re just doing their job. 7. Are you prepared to care for a sick bird? They must be separated from the flock to avoid spread of illness. Where will you keep them? 8. Chickens are easy to care for but they poop…a lot. Are you prepared to clean up daily? 9. They need protection from predators both day AND night. 10. Chickens love to scratch and peck but left to roam free they will destroy your lawn and gardens. Plan to have an area you are willing to allow them to do their thing. 11. Give them adequate space. Chickens are intelligent and get bored. When that happens they will pick on each other. I’m sure I’m forgetting many things but this is my top list of do’s and don’ts for proper chicken care. Please share!
