Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar (may increase to 2/3 for sweeter custard)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Heat water on stove for the water bath
  • Whisk eggs and sugar until well incorporated
  • Add milk, vanilla, and salt and whisk until well combined
  • Pour the custard mixture into your prepared baking dish or custard cups. Sprinkle the tops lightly with ground nutmeg.
  • For an especially smooth and evenly baked custard, place the dish or custard cups in a larger baking pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan, creating a water bath around the custard.
  • Bake until the custard is set around the edges but still has a slight jiggle in the center. Be careful not to overbake it, as overcooking can cause the custard to become firm or develop a slightly grainy texture. About 45-50 minutes
  • Remove the custard from the water bath and allow it to cool before serving.
