My oldest grand-daughter came to visit and her favorite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip. I thought I’d make a batch for her and get her honest opinion on this confection. (Hint: She LOVED it!)

Simple Wholesome Ingredients

This recipe uses 5 simple, wholesome ingredients: Milk, cream, sugar, peppermint extract, and chocolate chips. That’s it! No cooking, no eggs, no fuss, no muss. The results are a smooth, creamy ice cream that you will want to make all the time, any time!

Equipment Needed To Make Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

You will need an ice cream maker. The choice is yours: You can go old-school with the old wooden bucket and hand crank, or go with an electric ice cream maker. I’ve had this Cuisinart 2 qt. ice cream maker for several years and it’s perfect for whipping up this homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Ingredients

To make this delicious confection, you will need:

  • 1 cup COLD whole milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups COLD heavy cream
  • 1 tsp. peppermint extract (more if you like a sharper mint taste)
  • 1/2 cup mini dark chocolate chips (or finely chopped chocolate)
  • 2-3 drops green food coloring (totally optional)

How To Make Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

  • Whisk milk and sugar together until the sugar is well incorporated and melted into the milk, about 2 minutes.
  • Add heavy cream and peppermint extract. Continue to whisk until well combined. Add 2-3 drops of green food coloring to give it that trademark green color. This is totally optional and will not change the flavor of the ice cream.
  • Turn on your ice cream maker and pour in the mixture. Allow to churn for about 25 minutes.
  • Add mini chocolate chips and continue to churn for another 5 minutes.

Finishing The Ice Cream

The ice cream will be soft-set and ready to eat. However, I prefer to allow my ice cream to firm up in the freezer. Cover the ice cream bowl with included lid or plastic wrap and place in the freezer for one hour prior to serving. I prefer to transfer the ice cream to a loaf pan, cover and freeze. This makes it easier to scoop.

Serving Suggestions

I like to serve mint chocolate chip ice cream in a waffle bowl or cone. For extra chocolate flavor, add a drizzle of chocolate syrup over the ice cream. Top with your favorite whipped topping.
